Japanese Millet is specifically selected for its tolerance to flooded conditions.  It can be successfully seeding into duck impoundments, marshlands, pond and lake edges and beaver ponds.  This millet not only provides valuable forage for waterfowl and other wetland wildlife, but turkeys, doves, pheasant and songbirds also enjoy it for both food and habitat. For waterfowl, pair it with one of our exceptional corn varieties to round out the nutritional profile and increase attraction and dietary diversity. As a plant alone, it can grow up to 4 feet in 45 days.

Description

Japanese millet can grow in flooded water as long as a good portion of the plant stays above the water’s surface.  Not only can it be grown in colder and wetter soils than other summer grasses, it can withstand pHs as low as 4.5 and medium high salinity soil.  It grows best in sandy-clay loams in pH ranges of 4.6-7.4 where can make as much as 3500 lb/ac of above ground biomass.

It can be used as a weed-suppressing cover and makes roots that can reach 1.5 feet deep.
