Chufa

  • Great for sandy/loose soil.
  • Premier annual turkey feed.

Site Selection

  • Sandy or Loamy soil is preferred:
    • Moderately to well-drained soil is best, but Chufa can also grow in clay. If planted in clay soil, run a light disk over the hard clay in the fall (when the chufa has matured) or in early spring to break the soil.

Planting Time

  • In the north, April and May.
  • In the south, April through July.
  • Chufa takes 90-110 days to fully mature.
    • Allow 90-110 days of frost free days before planting.

Soil Preparation

  • Disk or plow to a firm, weed free seed bed.
  • Use a soil test to determine the exact amount of fertilizer and lime needed.
  • Without a test, use 400 pounds of 13-13-13 fertilizer and 1,000 pounds of lime per acre.

Planting Method

  • Broadcast 50 lbs per acre and use a harrow or drag to cover the seed with 1-2 inches of soil.
